Microsoft® FrontPage® 2000

Quick Start Menu: UploadingFTPSSL Secure ServerFAQs

The instructions on this page refer to the latest version, Microsoft FrontPage 2000, and may differ slightly from the method users of FrontPage 97/98 would use. To begin you will need your domain name or IP address, your User Name, and your password. Also, it is recommended that you use FrontPage to create a local copy of the Web site on your hard drive first, then upload the Web to the server. TCPIPHost does not recommend real-time editing of the Web site directly on the server without first saving a local backup copy.

Creating a new FrontPage web:

To create a new FrontPage web, follow the following steps:

  1. Start the FrontPage Explorer on your system. You should see the 'Getting Started' dialogue. If you don't see the 'Getting Started' dialogue, then go to the 'File' menu and select 'New' and 'FrontPage Web'.

  2. Select 'Create New FrontPage Web'.

  3. When the 'New FrontPage Web' dialogue appears, you will see two sections numbered '1' and '2'. In section 1, choose what type of Web you want to begin work on, or pick a specific Web site template. Under number 2, you will see a requester asking for the name of the new web. You should leave this blank if you want this Web to be the default (or first) Web for your TCPIPHost account.

  4. You can also change the location that the Web site will be saved on your hard drive here by selecting 'Browse' under the path name. Be sure you make note of the location of the new Web on your hard drive, so you can publish it to the server later.

  5. You are now ready to create the Web using whatever techniques you wish to produce the finished Web site. Your FrontPage documentation should have many helpful hints to assist you in the creation of your site.
Publishing your Web site to the server:

Now you should be ready to publish the new Web site to the server using the following steps:
  1. Connect to your Internet Service Provider.

  2. If you are not already looking at the local copy of your Web site using FrontPage Explorer, then start FrontPage and select 'Open and Existing FrontPage Web' from the 'Getting Started' dialogue. (If you do not see the 'Getting Started' dialogue, select 'File', and 'Open FrontPage Web'.)

  3. From here, you should see a list of available, recently-opened FrontPage webs. Select the one you wish to upload and click 'OK'. Alternately, you can select 'More Webs', type in the location of the Web on your hard drive, such as 'c:\myweb' or similar, and click on 'List Webs' to find your 'Root Web'.

  4. Go to the file menu and select 'Publish'. You will see one of two possible requesters open, asking for the name of the Web server. If you see your IP address or domain on the existing list (ie. you have uploaded previously to your site), then just choose it and click 'OK'. If not, you will need to select 'More Webs', and type in your domain name or IP address. You will also see an option to 'Publish Changed Pages Only', which you may want to deselect if this is the first time you have published to the server. Your Web site should then be published to the server automatically. Make sure the default home page is named 'index.html', so that the site will be visible when you visit it with your Web browser.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Important Note

Although we provide FTP access to FrontPage accounts, it should NOT be used to upload your pages to your account. You should only use FTP to upload to your public ftp directory or to upload scripts to your cgi-bin directory. If you use FTP to modify your site (html files, etc.), you will run into errors the next time you use FrontPage to access your Web site, and the FrontPage extensions may become corrupted. Also, do not remove any files from your FrontPage account with an FTP client. The only files that you may remove with FTP are the files that you put there with FTP (cgi scripts and files in your public FTP directory). Using FTP to upload or remove system files will cause the FrontPage extensions to eventually become corrupted, and your web-bots, publish option, and other FrontPage features may not function properly. When the FrontPage extensions become corrupted, we will have to reinstall them. You can, however, maintain an anonymous FTP area on your FrontPage account without any problems, as this does not involve uploading to the server.

SSL Secure Server

The SSL secure server can be accessed by any FrontPage or UNIX account, and will allow the information taken down on a form to be processed securely. The SSL cannot function correctly on a page with FrontPage web-bots included. This means that FrontPage users can use the secure server, but cannot use the Form-Bot, or any other Web-Bot, in conjuction with the SSL to set up the online selling area for the account. The Form-Bot will not work correctly when using the 'https' reference needed for the SSL to function. To set up a secure form with your FrontPage account, you will have to use a standard Perl script and a standard HTML form to take down any encrypted information. Simply use FrontPage or another Web editor to create a form in HTML format with the fields you want to use for the ordering page, and upload it using FrontPage.
